NANTONG, China(May 20 , 2019)—Tao Huang won the open-qualifying tournament at Nantong Yangtze River Golf Club on Monday, earning a spot in this week’s Nantong Championship, the sixth tournament of the 2019 season. Huang birdied the 18th hole to break free from a tie with India’s Lakshya Dev Mudgil, American Lexus Keoninh and China amateur Yunliang Chen. The trio also qualified, alongside Americans Harry Boyd and Kevin Chen, Japan’s Shigeru Nakagawa, China’s Wei Jiang and Xiang Cao and England’s Leon Fricker.

Cao won a playoff against fellow Chinese players Yanzhang Wang and Haochuan Wu and Korean Woopyoung Cho for the final qualifying spot after the four players ended 18 holes tied.

For Huang, of Chinese Taipei, this will be his 2019 debut after playing 23 tournaments combined in 2016 and 2018, PGA TOUR Series-China’s last two seasons. Monday, he had two birdies and three bogeys on a windy afternoon.

“Today’s wind was a bit strong, and that added to the difficulties of the competition,” Huang said. “I putted well today, and that allowed me to achieve the good result.”

In his career, Huang has recorded two top-10s—both coming in 2016. He tied for eighth at the season-opening Henan Open and then bookended that with a tie for sixth at the season-ending Buick Open.
